Family Therapy for Separated or Divorced Families

Family therapy is one of the most effective ways to help your family successfully reconfigure into a two-family unit. This type of therapy will include all family members, and sessions may occur individually with one family member, dyadically with a couple family members, and if relevant/applicable – it may occur as a whole family. Individual goals are set for each family member. Any relationships in the family unit that need additional support will be targeted (parent-child, sibling, etc.). The goal is to help the original family unit to heal, and then to move forward into a successful healthy two-family unit. This is an intensive therapy process since individual and family goals are targeted.

Reunification Therapy

For some parents and children, their relationship will experience a temporary disruption post-separation or divorce. This can also happen due to long distance relationships, a move away, military deployment, etc.
Intensive One Day: If you are seeking to facilitate an expedited reunification, we offer an Intensive One Day Therapeutic Reunification. As a part of this one-day experience, the clinician will meet with the child/children, speak to the parent with whom the child is spending most of his/her time, meet with the “rejected” or distant parent, and facilitate contact/meeting between the rejected/distant parent and the child/children. Follow up meeting/contacts by the clinician can also be included, if requested.
Intensive Weekend/Several Days: If you are seeking to facilitate an expedited reunification, but the reunification will require more time or needs to be spaced out over time, we offer an Intensive Weekend or 2-3 Day Therapeutic Reunification. As a part of this experience, the clinician will meet with the child/children, speak to the parent with whom the child is spending most of his/her time, meet with the “rejected” or distant parent, and facilitate contact/meeting between the rejected/distant parent and the child/children. Follow up meeting/contacts by the clinician can also be included, if requested.
90 Days: If you are seeking to facilitate a reunification, we offer a 90 day short term treatment for families that require more weekly, ongoing care/support. This treatment may include intensive therapeutic half or full days, if needed. The clinician will work with all members of the family in various configurations to help effectuate a reunification. After 90 days, feedback can be provided to the Court or neutral court professionals working with the family to determine next steps, as needed.

Body Boundary/Sexual Abuse Psychoeducation

In some separated/separating families, there may be concern about boundaries and privacy in one or both homes. With young children, they may benefit from a neutral professional working with them to better understand body-related boundaries, privacy, etc. A clinician will work with the child on psychoeducation in this domain. In addition, parents will be instructed on the boundaries/rules and parent-child sessions may occur.

Substance Abuse Education & Therapy

When a parent has an active addiction or is in recovery, substance abuse has typically impacted the entire family system. We will work with the family unit to cope with the addiction, whether it is active or recovering. The children will be educated on addiction and will work through their own healing process pertaining to the addiction. Parent-child sessions may occur to assist this process.

Domestic Violence Counseling

We work with any family member when domestic abuse has occurred in the family. We offer treatment and support for domestic violence victims. There is a focus on healing traumas and moving the victim away from their victimization and into healthy resilience. We also help children to heal from the domestic abuse they experienced in the family unit. We provide them with an understanding of the abuse dynamics, and set up strategies that children can use if exposed again to any abusive behaviors. If the alleged offender is seeking treatment, we can also help offenders to heal their prior traumas, make amends to their family members, and move forward with more positive coping strategies and behaviors.

Therapeutic Visitation

Some parent-child relationships need the help of a therapist to assist in facilitating and supporting the parent-child relationship. If therapeutic visitation is needed, we will assign a clinician to therapeutically supervise parents during their parenting time. Coaching and education will be offered to the parent. The residential parent will also be included to help inform and support the visitation process.
